Rincon Park is adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, and
lies between the realigned Embarcadero Roadway and the
Herb Caen Promenade, with views to Yerba Buena Island
and the Berkley and Oakland skylines. The overall site
is approximately 2.4 acres with 900 feet of shoreline.
Originally a part of the San Francisco Bay, this
reclaimed tract of land was the site of freight railways,
dirt pathways and warehouses. The site has been redesigned
as a public park with easy access to the waterfront.
Generous expanses of lawn are tilted and oriented
to allow views to the San Francisco Bay. The lawns
are edged with a series of low seat walls reminiscent
of lapping waves on shore. Tucked into and between
the seat walls are shrub and perennial plantings native
to California and coastal areas. The waterside edge
ebbs and flows into the promenade. Within the park
is a large public piazza situated between two small
restaurants for outdoor dining, concerts and gatherings.
