In 1914, George Hermann, one of Houston's first park
commissioners, gave 285 wooded acres to the city as
a municipal park for public recreation. Later gifts
and purchases have added to the original tract, and
Hermann Park remains Houston's premier civic park, used
by citizens and visitors.

Conceived as a significant anchor to Houston's urban
plan, George Kessler's historic design for Hermann Park
was never fully implemented. While subsequent periods
of citywide growth have affected the park, the strength
and simplicity of the original plan has been eroded
by additions and the loss of usable park land.

As Houston moves into the 21st century, it is an appropriate
moment to examine the past and plan for the future of
the park, while recalling the vision of the city's founders
and private benefactors. Olin Partnership completed
a detailed analysis of the site and prepared a comprehensive
master plan for landscape improvements. Implementation
is now being phased as funding becomes available.
