The 1500-acre Presidio of San Francisco has been a military
post since the earliest Spanish military settlement,
established in 1776. In 1989, it was decommissioned
as base for the 6th US Army and turned over to the National
Park Service. The Presidio Trust was formed to direct
the transition from post to park, and ensure its long-term
economic and environmental sustainability.
Redesign of the Main Parade Ground is the centerpiece
of a major revitalization of the Main Post at the
heart of the Presidio, with new arts projects, office
space, residential lodging and new institutional uses.
The plan proposes a pedestrian "esplanade"
along the eastern edge of the Main Parade that will
connect El Presidio, the Civil War Parade, historic
buildings and site features to the Presidio Trails
system. The "esplanade" provides new events
space, interprets the history of the Presidio, and
provides social space in the form of porches, cafes,
overlooks and gardens. Major works of art, both donated
and commissioned will contribute to a vital urban
center for the Presidio.
