Mission Bay Trash Receptacles, San Francisco, California

The trash receptacles at Mission Bay were originally designed at the request of the client, Catellus Corporation. The client was interested in finding a receptacle that would fit into the design aesthetic established by Olin Partnership for the streetscapes, while at the same time fulfilling certain functional requirements. Catellus requested that both recycling and trash bins be integrated into a single 30-gallon unit that would be durable and easily maintained. The result, as shown, is a receptacle that is elliptical, both in its changing vertical sections, and in profile. It integrates a recycling bin in the top, as well as a trash bin in the lower portion. Both bins are accessed from a single side opening panel. The receptacle is made from cast aluminum, with a powder coated color application. The design is now a standard for all streetscapes in the Mission Bay development.

Olin Partnership worked with Forms + Surfaces to finalize the design and fabricate the receptacles.
